4. Sherwood loves the club
Sherwood was panned by Spurs fans for admitting an affection for bitter north London rivals Arsenal (his dad still goes to watch the Gunners apparently) but the former midfielder spent four seasons at White Hart Lane as a player and has been on the coaching staff since 2008, so clearly has history with the white half of North London
Indeed, on getting the job Sherwood said: “It’s an honour to be head coach of this top club.
“It’s a club that means an awful lot to me and a proud moment.
“If you cut me in half, I bleed the colour of the club. It means an awful lot to me. Blood is thicker than water, as they say.”
Loving the club is no guarantee of success in the dugout, as Glenn Hoddle found, but it’s got to count for something and is certainly in contrast to Van Gaal, who seems to be happy to settle for any job in the Premier League.
