1. Stability
Van Gaal would come complete with eight domestic titles and a Champions League crown but the Dutchman would also bring further change to White Hart Lane. Sherwood wrought the changes, dismantling Villas-Boas’ rigid 4-2-3-1 formation and restoring Emmanuel Adebayor to the first team. The Spurs players have responded brilliantly but it will take more time to fully adapt to the 44-year-old’s methods and, given the amount of injuries to key players, it may not be until next season that we truly see Sherwood’s Tottenham.
To dismantle six months work again and appoint a third manager in six months, even one of Van Gaal’s stature, would only unsettle the players and see the club back at square one. Change is a strong currency in Premier League football but the power of stability should not be dismissed. Just ask Arsenal fans.
