Our take on why the Gunners might miss out in 2014/15.
A lack of a genuine world class centre forward
Despite another solid season from Olivier Giroud, the Frenchman arguably doesn’t possess the dynamism that is needed from a centre forward in a team likely to be genuine contenders. His lack of pace leaves the Gunners relying heavily on the pace of Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott from deep areas to stretch defences – something that becomes a problem when they are operating with the likes of Santi Cazorla and Tomas Rosicky in those areas instead.
Wenger may be hoping that the emergence of Yaya Sanogo and Joel Campbell helps out, whilst both Sanchez and Walcott can also be used upfront, but it is a surprise that he hasn’t moved for a striker this summer.
