2. For wasting money on the wrong players.
Rodgers proudly announced he had fixed Liverpool’s defence for the next decade after landing Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori for a combined £25m this summer. While the Reds needed a back-up centre half, they did not need to spend big on two centre backs, particularly when Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger remain the club’s best defensive pairing. Ilori cannot even make the match-day squad, while Sakho is a promising defender but worth nowhere near the £19m the club paid.
Meanwhile Rodgers has also splashed out £15m on Joe Allen, aka ‘the Welsh Xavi’, who is not good enough for Liverpool, while Fabio Borini, Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto also look like spectacular wastes of money.
Finally, Rodgers wasted £9m on Simon Mignolet, a talented shot-stopper but no better than fan favourite Pepe Reina, who was bizarrely farmed out on loan to Napoli. This decision is made all the more baffling because Rodgers demands his goalkeepers use their feet to play the ball out from the back. Mignolet is dreadful with his feet, while Reina is arguably one of the most technically gifted goalkeepers in world football.
Kenny Dalglish was villified for wasting money on overpriced British players but Rodgers has wasted nearly as much cash on unnecessary purchases.
