Spurs’ season: five reasons it’s been dreadful doom and five reasons for hope.
5. Raised expectations
This season has been particularly hard to stomach for Spurs fans because it began with such optimism. Following a record Premier League points haul last term and £105m spent in the summer, even the loss of Gareth Bale couldn’t completely dampen expectations at White Hart Lane. Changes of manager at Chelsea, Man City and Man United only added to the sense that this could finally be Tottenham’s year. Spurs have had poorer campaigns in the Premier League era but never when the team was supposed to do well. It’s the hope that kills you.
