3. Lack of defense
It’s no secret that the Cowboys had a terrible defense in 2013. In fact, they finished with the bottom-ranked total defense in the NFL. The Cowboys even lost a game where they scored 48 points. This has been a problem for the Cowboys for a while though. They have not finished with a top-15 defense since 2009, where they finished second in scoring defense and ninth in total defense. This happens to be the last time the Cowboys made the playoffs, and they were also able to make the playoffs in 2006 with the 20th-ranked scoring defense. Romo also led last year’s team to an 8-7 record despite the defense hitting rock bottom.
2. Great stats
While stats do not fully measure the value of a quarterback, it is hard to argue with the numbers that Romo has posted. In eight seasons, the Cowboys quarterback has thrown 208 touchdowns against 101 interceptions with a 64.6 completion percentage. This all equates to a 95.8 rating, which ranks fifth all-time. Romo has thrown at least 31 touchdown passes three times in his career, including two of his last three. This shows that Romo has improved his game over the course of his career.
