Who could replace the Belgian in the Gunners back line.
It looks as if Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen’s time at the Emirates Stadium is coming to an end and that the Belgium international will be leaving this summer, reports the Guardian.
The 28-year-old has been forced onto the periphery of the first team in north London this season as Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker continue to improve their central defensive partnership.
As a result Vermaelen has grown frustrated at a lack of first team opportunities and has been strongly linked with a move to Napoli, along with a host of other clubs including the Gunners’ Premier League rivals Chelsea.
The north Londoners have been linked with a number of high profile names to replace the centre-back, so here are five of the best.
Rio Ferdinand, Manchester United
Perhaps the biggest surprise on this list is veteran Ferdinand making a switch to the English capital after 13 years with the Red Devils.
The 35-year-old’s current contract at Old Trafford expires in the summer and despite ongoing discussions about a new one, as yet nothing has been agreed.
Arsene Wenger is a known admirer of Ferdinand and the Englishman may well be tempted by one last adventure in the top flight.
