The Gunners stars that could be the next skipper at the Emirates.
Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen is on the verge of joining Barcelona in a £15m deal after an ongoing transfer saga that also involved Manchester United.
It will bring to an end five years at the Emirates Stadium for the 28-year-old, who for the past two seasons has also been the captain following Robin van Persie’s sale to the Red Devils in 2012.
With Vermaelen heading to La Liga here are five current Gunners stars who could replace the Belgium international as skipper.
Mikel Arteta
The current vice-captain in North London and at 32-years-old has vast amounts of experience in the game, particularly in the Premier League where the Spaniard has played for the past nine years.
However, there were signs last term that Arteta’s talent was waning and like Vermaelen the midfielder could spend a lot of time on the sidelines in the coming 12 months.
