3. Boring, boring Hodgson
With the veritable numerical soup of formations now being used in today’s game, it is a genuine shock to see a team playing a standard higher than Sunday league line up with a 4-4-2. However, against Norway that’s exactly what Hodgson did. Friendlies are a chance to experiment and juggle things around to accommodate the player you should be building the team around. Raheem Sterling is the prime example. His trickery won England the penalty and he looked dangerously close to creating something towards the end when he was moved to the tip of a midfield diamond. Watching them on Wednesday just looked unnatural.
