11pm Football…
It has been a joy to have football on at a time that thoroughly suits the British TV market. Games at 9pm and 11pm – which included England’s opening fixture against Italy – ensured that there would be no missing games due to work commitments, at least if you work a standard 9 till 5 day-time shift. Those that remember the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan will remember painfully early start times, with all the day’s games finished by mid-afternoon.
The other positive regarding kick-off times is that they haven’t been moved simply to benefit the British or European TV market. While that was undoubtedly a consideration, a 9pm start equates to a 5pm kick-off in Rio de Janeiro, and the stands have been packed as a result.
