3. Cut the dead wood, but keep the quality
One of the biggest problems at Arsenal at present is that there are too many players who don’t possess the required quality for the team, and that the club are finding it increasingly difficult to sell.
Denilson is still on loan at Sao Paulo, the aforementioned Andre Santos has gone to Gremio, Nicklas Bendtner is at Juventus, Emmanuel Frimpong to Charlton Athletic then Fulham, Johan Djourou to Hannover 96 and Marouane Chamakh to West Ham United.
At any other side, these players would not be sent out on loan with their wages still subsidised by the parent club, and effectively Arsenal are just throwing money away.
Sebastien Squillaci is on a reported £50,000 per week. That means every season, Arsenal spend close to £3 million on a player who seems has no possibility of playing for the first team – and he’s just one example.
Keeping the best players at Arsenal also ought to be a priority, and the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri, Gael Clichy, Robin Van Persie and Alex Song have all departed in recent seasons.
Theo Walcott has signed a new deal to stay at Emirates Stadium this season, whilst Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, Carl Jenkinson, Kieran Gibbs and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have also recently committed to the club.
So long as Arsenal reward players on merit and cast aside mediocrity, they will do much better.
