Case dropped against quarterback after evidence deemed insufficient.
Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston has been cleared of sexual assault allegations after lawyers said there is not enough evidence to press charges.
The Heisman Trophy candidate Winston had faced charges after being accused of sexually assaulting a woman at an apartment in December 2012.
Winston’s lawyer said his client had consensual sex with the 19-year-old woman. But the woman’s lawyer said the star quarterback raped her client.
Meggs said the presence of DNA of a second unknown male on the accuser’s clothes made it difficult to prosecute.
The 19-year-old Winston recorded 35 touchdowns and had 3,490 passing yards for Florida State this season.
He is expected to be a finalist for the Heisman Trophy which annually goes to the top American college football player.
Florida State is 12-0, ranked first in the standings and will take on Duke in the ACC championship game on Saturday night.
