Mayweather fights Maidana in September, May’s opponent unnamed…
Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather has sparked wild rumours after revealing that he has a “big surprise” for boxing fans with his fight in May next year.
Argentine fighter Marcos Maidana will get a rematch with the American superstar on September 13, after he gave the undefeated fighter a tougher test than many expected in Las Vegas in May.
While Maidana adopted an all-out attack policy last time out, he will hope to have learned his lessons from that bout in order to get the better of Mayweather this time round, but he also insists that he respects his opponent for being a man of his word and giving him a rematch.
However, while that was the initial focus of Mayweather’s statement at an awards ceremony on Sunday, the WBC and WBA welterweight champion let slip about his plans for next year.
“September 13, back to business, Marcos Maidana v Floyd Mayweather part two,” he said. “Then in May, I’ll have a big surprise for you.”
Many have taken the “big surprise” to finally be the fight that fans have waiting years for, with Mayweather taking on Manny Pacquiao.
However, there has been no official word on whether or not there is any strength behind that rumour, although it does look even more bleak for Amir Khan who has been desperate to get in the ring with Mayweather for some time.
Khan was unable to put himself forward for September due to the fact that he did not want to train while fasting for Ramadan, but while he is likely to be left disappointed again, the news is good for another British fighter.
By selecting Maidana as his next opponent, Mayweather ruled out a possible bout with Shawn Porter which means the IBF welterweight champion will be free to face Kell Brook with the fight expected to take place on September 6, possibly in Los Angeles, after an original date of August 9 fell through.
