Gerard Pique – Left Barcelona in 2004, returned in 2008
Now recognised as one of the best centre-backs in the world, Pique didn’t make the grade at Old Trafford during a four year spell at the club. Snapped up for free when the player did not have a professional contract with Barca, Pique made his debut way back in 2004, but never cemented himself a place in the first-team. Despite impressing during a loan spell at Zaragoza in 2006/07, Pique only made nine appearances the next year with United, which convinced Sir Alex Ferguson to let him go. Barcelona paid £5m for his services, and he has since gone on to win two Champions League titles, four La Ligas, and has been elected into the World Team of the Year three times.
