Sam Newman makes headlines again for all of the wrong reasons.
Former AFL star Sam Newman has come under fire for comments made regarding the NFL’s first gay player Michael Sam.
It is not the first time Newman has caused controversy on the AFL’s Footy Show, having appeared on camera wearing a black face, while also smoking a fake bong live, with his comments regarding Sam the last straw for several viewers.
After receiving news he was drafted by the St Louis Rams, Sam planted a kiss on his male partner, with the seemingly harmless incident causing more uproar about his imminent arrival in the NFL.
When asked to comment on what he thought of the ‘cake kiss’, Newman did not hold back with his true feelings.
“It was an annoying, gratuitous act,” Newman said on Wednesday night’s The Footy Show. “Kissing your boyfriend … No heterosexual couple would do that.”
However, Newman was quickly shot down by co-hosts Garry Lyon and James Bradshaw who both called Newman a homophone and that he comments were off the pace with what the majority of society felt about the incident.
Newman stuck to his guns and said no straight couple would do that, with Lyon further hammering home his point by saying it was the natural thing to do when Sam has just got the news he was waiting for.
