Speaking to ESPN FC, the former Arsenal man revealed his belief that Christian Benteke and Philippe Coutinho are the only real world class talents in the current team and the rest of the squad is “average”.
As a result, he suggested that they could struggle to secure a place in the top six in the league this season, which could in turn put pressure on Jurgen Klopp to improve the situation next year.
The German tactician arrived at Anfield last month and put together a six-game unbeaten run with three wins and three draws prior to falling to his first defeat against Crystal Palace at home before the international break.
That result leaves the Reds in 10th place in the Premier League after 12 games having collected 17 points, with their goalscoring woes particularly a cause for concern having only found the net 13 times this season.
While that is the lowest tally of the top 10 teams in the league, Klopp is still searching for that killer instinct in the final third despite his side showing signs that they were capable of putting together impressive offensive performances with the 3-1 win over Chelsea.
However, it hasn’t been straight-forward since that victory last month and Klopp will be desperate to get back to winning ways when his side take on Manchester City at the Etihad on Saturday evening.
The former Dortmund boss is arguably still installing his beliefs and philosophy into the squad and it is questionable as to whether or not he has the preferred personnel to carry out those tactics.
As a result, it may well still be too early to judge the 48-year-old who will continue to mould this squad into his style of team in the coming weeks and months.
