Reports in the Daily Express claim Cole could be set for a shock return to the Premier League after it emerged that the left-back looks certain to leave Roma at the turn of the year.
The Italian side’s manager, Rudi Garcia, is not convinced that the ex-England international has the right attributes to fit in with his high-intensity methods, and has instructed the club’s hierarchy to find a suitable replacement.
It is also claimed that Cole has his heart set on a move back to the Premier League, where he enjoyed much success playing under the likes of Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho.
The source adds that a possible short-term destination for the 33-year-old could be Old Trafford, with Van Gaal keen to bring in competition for youngster Luke Shaw.
The Red Devils boss has been forced to tinker with his back-line numerous times due to injuries, and could be tempted to offer Cole a life-line in the next transfer window.
