The Barca star believes landing the German is superb business.
Arsenal’s former captain and current Barcelona ace Cesc Fabregas says the Gunners signed Real Madrid’s second best player when they bought Mesut Ozil for £42.4m on Monday.
The Gunners smashed their previous transfer record by £27.4m when the club decided to bring in Ozil and Fabregas can’t quite believe Los Blancos allowed the attacking midfielder to leave.
“I was really surprised by Ozil’s departure,” the 26-year-old told Spanish radio station Cadena Cope.
“He seemed to me the second-best player at Madrid, after Cristiano [Ronaldo].”
The Germany international is expected to really lift the team at the Emirates Stadium, having become the player with the most assists in Europe in the past three years with an impressive 81 in 159 matches for Madrid.
The arrival of Gareth Bale in a world record £85.3m move from Tottenham Hotspur, along with Isco of Malaga, knocked Ozil’s confidence that the 24-year-old would get much game time at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Therefore the German decided to leave the Spanish capital and despite the midfielder being good enough to play for possibly any side in world football, manager Arsene Wenger eventually convinced the ex-Los Blancos star to come to north London.
Find out what Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho thinks of former player Ozil.
Fabregas was also the subject of transfer speculation this summer, with two bids from Manchester United bring submitted for Spaniard – both of which were rejected by the player and Barca.
“I want to finish in a happy manner and if I can retire at Barca, then so much the better,” the midfielder explained.
“It was my dream since I was small. I wouldn’t go, not even for double the money.”
