Maloney was one of the top promoter’s in the UK for years…
In an emotional interview with the Mirror, retired boxing promoter Frank Maloney has revealed that he is set to undergo a sex change after years of keeping his desire a secret.
Amongst Maloney’s most successful clients over the years was undisputed heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis, with the 61-year-old spending decades in the business before calling time on her career last year.
Maloney reveals that she felt she was born in the wrong gender for an extended period of time and only now feels comfortable in publicly revealing the decision after walking away from the sport.
“I was born in the wrong body and I have always known I was a woman,” she says, her voice cracking with emotion.
“I can’t keep living in the shadows, that is why I am doing what I am today. Living with the burden any longer would have killed me.”
Maloney, now referred to as Kellie, has already been through a transitional year where she has been learning to cope with living life as a woman, but due to the nature of the sport of boxing, she has naturally kept it under wraps until now.
In addition to hormone therapy, Maloney has undergone hundreds of hours of hair removal electrolysis, voice coaching and specialist counselling to successfully deal with the transition.
The former promoter went on to concede that there was no way he could admit his secret while she was still in the business due to the fear of the backlash she would receive at shows from both fans and potentially boxers.
However, having admitted to falling out of love with boxing last year, it is time for Kellie to be introduced to the world and Maloney will now face a completely different battle as the reaction comes in to the news as she becomes the most high profile figure from the world of sport to go public about having gender reassignment therapy.
