Torres is out of favour at Stamford Bridge under current boss Jose Mourinho and was loaned to AC Milan for the 2014/15 season as a result, with a return to West London unlikely with the striker’s contract expiring next summer.
However, di Matteo is keen for the Blues to cancel that deal so that he can sign the 30-year-old permanently for Schalke when the transfer window reopens in the New Year.
Despite the fact Torres has largely been considered a flop since becoming the then British record transfer of £50m upon completing his move to the Bridge from Liverpool in 2011, the Italian thinks the forward has a lot to offer.
The Spain international scored a crucial Champions League semi-final goal against FC Barcelona as di Matteo went on to make history with the West Londoners in 2012 and win the tournament and this affection for Torres has not waned since.
The former midfielder took charge at the Veltins Arena in the summer and is looking to bring a household name to the Bundesliga club and the attacker would certainly fit that bill.
