Everton defender John Stones continues to be a prime target for Chelsea, and the Blues are more willing than ever to break the bank to get stubborn Toffees boss Roberto Martinez to cave in.
However, Stones is also being linked to Manchester United. The Metro reports that former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley is advising the 21-year-old to make the jump to Old Trafford.
Burley is quoted as saying: “I would go to Manchester United because it’s the bigger club. It is not the most successful club at the moment, but it is the bigger club.”
Man United have not made any formal offers for Stones, but they may be able to get a leg up on Chelsea if they offer a high enough bid.
The Blues have already had three bids rejected, including one worth £30m.
They have also frustrated the Everton manager in the process, as he became angry with Jose Mourinho publicising their negotiations.
Meanwhile, Man United are still hoping to make a splash signing before the transfer window closes.
They have missed out on Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos and Valencia’s Nicolas Otamendi, who transferred to Manchester City.
Stones may be the perfect long-term solution to the Red Devils’ defence, which has shown promise at the beginning of the season with no goals conceded in two Premier League games.
