Former Chelsea forward Demba has hit out at his former manager Jose Mourinho, claiming that he wasn’t given a fair crack of the whip at Stamford Bridge because he wasn’t a ‘star’ name, unlike fellow strikers Samuel Eto’o and Fernando Torres.
Ba was allowed to leave the club to join Turkish side Besiktas this summer by Mourinho, having largely been used as a third choice striker last season, despite a very respectable goalscoring record.
The Senegalese international felt that his lack of star quality counted against him:
“Sometimes when you are at a club with a lot of big stars, the name counts for more than the statistics. Unfortunately, it was like that in my case.”
Ba was signed from Newcastle United and, despite never really establishing himself, maintained a solid record – something that he will be looking when Besiktas face Arsenal in a Champions League qualifying tie this week.
