The 35-year-old scored a staggering 215 off just 147 deliveries against Zimbabwe, as his side posted a daunting 372/2 for their 50 overs.
“There’s no better player to watch in full flight than Chris Gayle, simply because of the pure power of the man. He has an extraordinarily brutal way of hitting the ball, which renders bowlers powerless,” Butcher said.
The double century – which included a joint record 16 sixes – eclipsed the previous highest score, held by South African Gary Kirsten, who amassed 188 not out against UAE in 1996.
While in awe over Gayle’s batting accomplishments, which includes the fastest ever twenty20 century, Butcher was critical of the bowling attack which Gayle picked off.
“If ever Chris Gayle was going to show the ball-striking that we know he can produce, then it’s going to be against a bowling attack that at times was absolutely hapless.
“There was nothing they could do against it – they simply didn’t have the talent to be able to stop him,” Butcher added.
Gayle’s partnership of 372 with Marlon Samuels – who scored 133 not out – is also the highest in ODI history.
