Liverpool eye Malaga star as the latest Steven Gerrard replacement
City’s shock loss to Burnley at the weekend which has but a serious dent in the club’s title challenge has led to speculation Pellegrini could be on his way out if his side fail to beat Barcelona in the Champions League this week.
However, in a strange twist if Benitez quits current club Napoli for a move to City, Pellegrini could then replace him as boss of the Serie A side.
The Daily Star report that City’s Abu Dhabi owners will target the former Liverpool manager due to the likely unavailability of Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola who is their first choice.
And another favourite for the City job, Diego Simeone, is not eager to leave current club Atletico Madrid.
Benitez has a good record in England having won the Champions League with Liverpool and Europa League with Chelsea having previously secured the UEFA Cup and Spanish league title with Valencia.
