Former Liverpool favourite John Arne Riise has admitted that he is “seriously impressed” with the start that Joe Gomez has made to his Reds career.
The 18-year-old defender arrived from Charlton Athletic for £3.5m earlier this summer and had been expected to begin lift at Anfield with the youth team.
But the teenager earned Brendan Rodgers’s faith in pre-season and has helped the club to three clean sheets in their first three games of the Premier League campaign.
“I’m very, very impressed by Joe Gomez,” Riise told Sky Sports. “I am seriously impressed. I must admit did not know too much about him before he came to the club but he’s started every game for Liverpool this season.
“You can see that defensively he’s very strong and that he is also very quick. I’m really excited for him and I hope he can keep his form going for himself and for Liverpool.”
Riise knows what it takes to be Liverpool’s left-back, making 334 appearances for the Merseysiders and winning seven trophies in seven years at the club.
