Manchester United are expected to part ways with goalkeeper David de Gea by selling him to Real Madrid, whom the Spanish international has expressed mutual interest with.
De Gea is being encouraged to stay at Old Trafford by former Man United goalie Peter Schmeichel, who went on to slam the club for their handling of the De Gea transfer saga.
“I’m very thankful for what he has done for Manchester United and I would not hold anything against him if he moves on,” Schmeichel said, according to the Daily Express.
“But I want the situation resolved because it’s an absolute joke that it has carried on into the season.”
The former eight-year Man United goalie also revealed what he thinks his old club should do for a potential new contract for the 24-year-old.
“I would love David de Gea to commit to Manchester United and sign a five-year contract. He has been absolutely outstanding in the last two seasons,” Schmeichel said.

There is still a chance that De Gea may stay at United for the final season of his contract, as the club are refusing to budge on anything less than a £32.6m bid from Real Madrid.
Man United already seem resolved to the fact that De Gea will leave though, as they have not put him back in the net despite him remaining on the roster.
Sergio Romero has taken over the starting goalie duties, as manager Louis van Gaal believes that the transfer rumours are too much of a distraction for De Gea.
