Former NRL star Jarryd Hayne is closing in on a deal with the Detroit Lions, according to the Detroit Free Press.
The Lions have been linked to Hayne since the former Parramatta Eels man announced he was leaving rugby league to pursue a career in the NFL.
Detroit initially denied early reports of interest, but Lions coach Jim Caldwell confirmed the Lions hosted Hayne for a visit last week.
“We take a look at a lot of different people all the time,” Caldwell said a news conference today.
“It’s a constant sort of exploration for us, where we’re always trying to look to find ways to improve and we’re looking at every option that’s out there, available to us.”
According to the report, Hayne was back in Detroit on Monday, where the 26-year-old undertook a physical and is close to signing a contract.
It is understood that the Lions would sign Hayne to the side’s 10-man practice squad due to his lack of football experience.
