Former Red Bull driver Mark Webber says new regulations in Formula One make the sport “almost embarrassing”, and that he is concerned for category’s future.
In an interview with Austria’s Salzburger Nachrichten, the Australian used Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen as an example as to why the sport, in his opinion, has gone downhill as a spectacle.
“Look at Kimi, for example,” he said. “This is not racing. If you could drive the cars hard at the limit, he would be there. One fastest lap after the next.
“Now he’s completely frustrated…driving at 70 per cent of his maximum.”
Webber was also asked whether Sebastian Vettel’s expected move from Red Bull to Ferrari was a surprise.
“No,” he answered. “I’ve always expected him to eventually go where we all now expect him to go now.
“His next team will be his last in F1.
“He was frustrated, he wants results, but he also knows better than anyone that he will need to be patient.
“When Lewis (Hamilton) left McLaren, everyone said he was crazy. Look at him now.”
Webber currently drives for Porsche in the World Endurance Championship, where he sits equal ninth in the standings.
