Candela believes that the Italians would be foolish to let Lamela leave.
Former AS Roma full-back Vincent Candela says club should not sell Tottenham Hotspur target Erik Lamela after letting Pablo Osvaldo join Southampton.
Osvaldo became the Saints’ club record signing after moving from the Italian capital for £15m and Candela – who spent nine years with Roma – believes as a result Lamela should not be sold.
“I really like the arrival of Morgan De Sanctis in goal, but I am disappointed that Osvaldo has gone and I fear Lamela will follow,” the ex-France international was quoted by Football Italia.
“It is an error to deprive a team of two players like Osvaldo and Lamela. I hope that the money received will be invested in the right way on the transfer market.”
Since losing out on Willian to Chelsea, Spurs are likely to be putting extra effort into their pursuit of the forward.
New Tottenham director of football Franco Baldini was previously at Roma and therefore not only knows Lamela well, but is also in a better position to negotiate a deal for 21-year-old.
With Gareth Bale likely to be sold to Real Madrid for a world record fee, the north London club need support in attacking midfield and the Argentina international could be the ideal recruitment.
Lamela has impressed greatly since making the switch to Italy from River Plate two years ago and last term netted 15 Serie A goals in 33 matches – despite operating from the wing.
Osvaldo scored the same amount in 29 games, but had a very public falling out with the Roma manager and was never truly accepted back at the club.
