Former South Sydney Rabbitohs chief executive Shane Richardson says he did not attempt to cover up a pre-season incident involving axed captain John Sutton and new Manly Sea Eagles recruit Luke Burgess.
Details emerged on Sunday that Sutton and Burgess were disciplined by the club after engaging in “disorderly behaviour” during the Rabbitohs’ pre-season camp in Arizona late last year.
Richardson quit the club to become the NRL’s head of game strategy and development in March, and he insists he did not attempt a cover up.
“There was no cover up in any way shape or form,” he told the Sydney Morning Herald.
“The fact we didn’t unleash it to the media was because it was a breach of a code of conduct.
“The club made the decision.
“The board, the NRL’s integrity unit, the coaching staff, the players, their managers were all told when the breaches went out.”
The Rabbitohs announced on January 21 that Sutton had lost the captaincy in favour of Greg Inglis, while Burgess made the switch to Manly just a day earlier.
