The current Premier League champions are said to be looking for a replacement for under-fire Manuel Pellegrini this summer, and Benitez has emerged as one of the names to take the job.
However, it would only be on a 12-month deal as they wait for Pep Guardiola to see out the remaining year on his contract at Bayern Munich.
But while that wouldn’t appeal to most managers, Benitez is believed to be eager for a return to the English top flight at the Etihad.
A source close to the Spaniard said: “He has always wanted to work in the Premier League again because he thinks it’s the best place to be.
“It would have to be the right offer for him and managing Manchester City appeals to him. It’s something he would definitely be keen on.”
Pellegrini is dangerously close to the sack as he has wracked up a rather dismal six defeats in his past nine games.
And Benitez looks to be the most likely replacement as he still owns a home on Merseyside from his days in charge at Anfield..
