Glenn Hoddle is unconvinced by David Villa.
Tottenham Hotspur legend Glenn Hoddle has revealed that whilst he thinks Spurs should definitely sign at least two strikers this summer, they should not go for Barcelona’s David Villa.
The north London club have been strongly linked with Villa for some time but Hoddle thinks Spain’s all-time top-scorer isn’t the right fit for Andre Villas-Boas’ team.
“I’m not sure that’s the style of player they want,” Hoddle exclusively told fanatix.
“He’s a great player don’t get me wrong. But I think they need somebody who plays within the penalty area, a ‘fox in the box’ kind of player.
“There is already plenty of creative players, if Bale stays I don’t think they need Villa.”
The views of the 55-year-old come as quite a surprise as the credentials of the Barca forward are difficult to argue with – even if the Spaniard isn’t a traditional No.9 type of player.
Villa has scored an impressive 56 international goals in 91 matches for Spain, which has helped the nation to successive European Championship victories as well as their first ever World Cup triumph in 2010.
The 31-year-old was a £35.2m transfer to the Nou Camp from Valencia on the back of the forward’s World Cup performance in South Africa, although the Spain international has struggled with injuries during his time in Catalonia.
Despite this Villa has managed to score 49 times in 121 matches for Barca, but the arrival of Neymar at the club along with the continued genius of Lionel Messi means the striker may now have to move on to find first team football.
Hoddle meanwhile clearly doesn’t believe White Hart Lane should be that new destination however, but does think strikers are a transfer priority for AVB.
“They need two strikers. No doubt,” the former Spurs player and manager said.
“To go on a Europa League challenge and right on through the season, you need strength in depth. You need four good strikers. Their intent needs to be shown.”
