Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has been named as 2014 BBC Sports Personality of the Year at a glitzy ceremony in Glasgow, with the racing driver completing a fine year that saw him secure his second world title recently after a tense battle with rival Nico Rosberg.

Golfer Rory McIlroy came in second place in the public vote after a fine year that saw his individual triumphs complimented by a Ryder Cup victory with Europe, whilst runner Jo Pavey came third after her stunning performance at the Commonwealth Games.
Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo was given the overseas award, but his teammate Gareth Bale missed out on the overall gong, whilst Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley got coach of the year and the World Cup winning England women’s rugby team were voted team of the year.
