Defensive midfield:
Philipp Lahm (Germany) –In what would no doubt be a world class partnership, Germany and Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm takes the first defensive midfield slot here after his tremendous recent form for club and country. Once regarded as one of the best full-backs in the game, Lahm is now enjoying a new role in the centre of midfield and has more than earned his place in this star-studded lineup, beating the likes of team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger and France star Blaise Matuidi to one of these two spots.
Paul Pogba (France) – One of the best young players in the world, Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba has shone on the big stage for France so far at this World Cup, and completes a superb-looking midfield partnership here. A more attack-minded player than Lahm, Pogba would complement the German’s game well and provide support for this team’s exciting attacking quartet. Recently linked with a £60m move to Chelsea, Pogba’s value and reputation will grow even further if he can make a decisive impact in as big a game as tonight’s.
