Two of the four remaining European nations clash in the first quarter-final at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
France are aiming to reach the semis for the sixth time in the tournament’s history, while three-time champions Germany are bidding to book their 13th appearance in the last four.
The match in Rio de Janeiro will also see two contenders for the competition’s Golden Boot go head to head.
Colombia’s James Rodriguez currently leads the scoring charts with five, but Germany’s Thomas Muller is just one behind, while France forward Karim Benzema has three goals to his name.
These two nations have contested six matches in the past 20 years. Germany won the last encounter 2-1 in February 2013, thanks to goals from Muller and Sami Khedira.
Strikes from Olivier Giroud and Florent Malouda had given France a 2-1 victory 12 months earlier.
France enjoyed a period of domination over Germany between 1996 and 2005, winning three of their four meetings, keeping four clean sheets in the process.
