The veteran star ended a 13-year association with the west London club last summer when they opted against offering him a new deal.
He had signed a deal to join new MLS outfit New York City FC, but joined City until the end of the season instead.
He makes his return to the club on Saturday with both City and Chelsea battling it out for the Premier League title.
But he believes he will be welcomed back to Stamford Bridge, and even admitted that he would love to make a longer return there one day.
“Jose Mourinho and the club from the top have said they’ll love for me to be involved, whenever I want to go back,” he said.
“Chelsea is like going back home and it feels such a big part of me. When you are part of Chelsea.
“I’ve seen it with people like [Ron] ‘Chopper’ Harris and Peter Bonetti, they’re still there to this day. It’s a club that really looks after its players.
“If the opportunity was there to go back, I would love to, as I had such a long career there. It’s a part of me – and that never changes.”
