Rafael Nadal takes on compatriot David Ferrer in the French Open final, who is playing in his first Grand Slam final at the age of 31.
In stark contrast, Nadal is playing in his sixteenth final of a Major, and he has triumphed in eleven of those – marking him out as one of the greatest players in history.
His five Grand Slam losses have come against Roger Federer (twice) and Novak Djokovic (three times) – no slouches themselves – and though David Ferrer is playing his best ever tennis and deserves his place at number five in the world rankings, it is hard to see past Nadal as winner in this match.
The younger Spaniard leads the pair’s head-to-head by 19-4, and has won their last eight encounters, including all on clay since 2004, when he first met Ferrer as a teenager in Stuttgart.
Like the women’s final yesterday, in which Serena Williams justified her position as favourite by defeating Maria Sharapova in straight sets, it is hard to see past a Rafa Nadal victory.
