Manchester United did not make a blockbuster signing as many Red Devils fans had hoped, but they did not walk away empty-handed as they signed striker Anthony Martial from Monaco for £36m.
According to Squawka, French football expert Julien Laurens revealed that the Red Devils faced competition for the 19-year-old striker from Arsenal.
“[Arsenal] were interested, like other big clubs, Chelsea were, City were, Real Madrid were, Spurs were,” Laurens said.
The Gunners were also looking to bolster its attack, but Arsene Wenger’s attempts to find a new striker resulted in yet more disappointment for Arsenal fans.
Key targets Karim Benzema and Edinson Cavani remained at Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain respectively.

Although it remains to be seen just how much of an impact Martial will provide Man United, there’s no doubting the youngsters potential.
Martial experienced a breakout 2014-15 season with Monaco, as he scored nine goals in 35 appearances.
The £36m fee United paid for Martial could increase to as much as £58m including bonuses and add-ons.
It remains to be seen whether Martial can emerge as a long-term solution for the Red Devils, who are seeing a sluggish start from striker Wayne Rooney.
