‘GGG’ (32-0, 29 KOs) will put his WBA and IBO titles on the line in the bout, and although Monroe Jr lacks the experience and pedigree to really challenge him, he isn’t a fighter to be overlooked.
Naturally, the attention will be on whether or not the Kazakh star can claim another KO, while he will want to come through this encounter in order to set up a fight with Miguel Cotto later in the year.
However, he’ll be fully focused on the task in hand before thinking about that and he remains an absolute nightmare match-up for his rivals given his power and aggressive approach which in turn makes him a fans favourite.
While there could be a criticism of Golovkin regarding his opponents, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone that willingly wants to get in the ring with the 33-year-old. Having established himself as a knockout machine, there is a real shortage of possible opponents with suggestions that Cotto didn’t want the fight right now either.
That unification bout would certainly be big business and a great showdown further down the line, but Monroe poses different threats and his slick southpaw style could potentially cause problems for his dangerous rival.
Unfortunately for the American, it is highly unlikely that he will cause a sensational upset in California on Saturday night, and he will more than likely become Golovkin’s latest victim.
His southpaw stance will give ‘GGG’ something to think about and it will be an interesting test to see how he copes with adversity if he can’t find his target early on. However, expect him to find Monroe’s chin at some point in the middle rounds and move to 33 straight wins with another stoppage.
