Bayern have now entered the fray to sign Luiz.
Chelsea defender David Luiz has been heavily linked with a transfer to Barcelona this summer, but now Bayern Munich are preparing a £25m bid for the Brazilian, according to the Daily Mail.
Blues manager Jose Mourinho is doubtful of Luiz’s defensive capabilities and as such is prepared to let the 27-year-old leave Stamford Bridge if the price is right.
Barca are still the preferred choice of the Brazil international, but with the Catalans delaying their decision Bayern are hoping to capitalise.
The Bundesliga champions’ head coach Pep Guardiola is a huge admirer of Luiz and his style of play and wants him to shore up what is perhaps the team’s only weak spot.
Despite having a good defensive record in the German top tier in 2013/14, the 0-4 semi-final second-leg defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League showed up the defensive fragility of Guardiola’s side.
There are question marks over both Jerome Boateng and Dante in central defence and whilst Javi Martinez can fill in, the Spaniard is naturally a midfielder.
Luiz’s passing and technique based style also appeals to Guardiola and this is also why Barca are interested, as they still adopt a similar style to that which the 43-year-old instilled in them when he was in charge at the Nou Camp between 2008 and 2012.
The reigning Spanish champions inquired about the South American in 2013 and were quoted a £35m price back then, although that is likely to have dropped now it has become clear Mourinho doesn’t rate the defender.
