Liverpool and Arsenal will race to complete deals for Luiz Gustavo and Diego Contento…
Bayern Munich are adamant they will only sell one player before the close of the transfer window, meaning Liverpool and Arsenal face a race against time to secure their targets, reports the Express.
Arsenal have already lodged a £17m bid for Brazilian 25-year-old holding midfielder Luiz Gustavo, and Liverpool have turned to German 23-year-old left-back Diego Contento to strengthen their defence.
Contento will cost around £1.75m, or the Reds would be happy to take him on loan, but Bayern’s chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is only willing to sanction the departure of one player this month.
“We will only let one player leave,” said the two-time Ballon D’or winner.
“We play in the Bundesliga, the Champions League, at the Club World Cup. As such we need a big squad.”
Arsenal would appear favourite to complete their deal, after Gustavo admitted an interest in joining the North-Londoners. He would be the Gunners’ first major summer signing after missing out on Gonzalo Higuain and becoming increasingly frustrated in their pursuit of Luis Suarez.
The Brazilian would add some much needed bite to their midfield, and appease fans angered by the lack of transfer activity at the Emirates.
Liverpool are desperate for a a defender to compete with Jose Enrique, who is the only senior left-back at the club. Jack Robinson has left the club on loan, so Brendan Rodgers will be desperate to secure a player in the position before the end of the month.
