Germany meet Algeria in what promises to be an enthralling World Cup last-16 encounter tonight, with the unfancied African nation looking for a long-awaited measure of revenge on their opponents.
Although this Algeria side have already achieved history in this year’s tournament by making it through to the knockout stages for the first time, their mission now is to get one over their big-name opposition after the infamous events of the 1982 World Cup finals.
An agreement at the time between Germany and Austria allowed the two sides to play out a dead-rubber game with almost no effort from either team, which allowed them to both finish with enough points to eliminate Algeria from the group stage.
Still hurting from that day, Vahid Halilhodzic’s side will be hoping to cause a major upset here and beat one of the tournament favourites to progress to the quarter-finals.
After winning their group, Germany will be hoping to continue their strong run of form as they look to end their relatively long wait for a major trophy, and in-form forward Thomas Mueller looks the likeliest player to provide them with the goals they need.
