USA’s victory over saturday collected more viewers than primetime UFC fight and ESPN Baseball show
Interest in soccer would appear to be on the increase after it was revealed the USA’s Gold Cup win over Panama on Sunday brought in ratings of 1.7. The only other sporting event that night to draw higher ratings was the RBC final round of the Canadian open, which was on CBS and drew a 1.8.
Sunday’s ratings were the highest for a soccer match in 2013 and FOX’s second highest overnight rating for a soccer match. The ratings also compare favourably against the UEFA Champions League final between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, which drew an overnight rating of 1.0, the Mexico-USA World cup qualifying match, which drew 1.6, and the Confederations Cup final between Brazil and Spain which drew ratings of 1.5.
What is positive for the development of soccer is the fact the match edged an ever popular primetime UFC fight on FOX, ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball and FOX’s Saturday MLB broadcast, all of which drew a 1.6 rating.
Whilst the ratings of MLS matches do not tend to reach similar levels to Sunday evening, these ratings suggest that a bright future is developing for soccer in the USA.
