US Open champion Marin Cilic has withdrawn from this 2015 Australian Open with a shoulder injury.
The world number nine has been struggling with the problem for more than a month and he has pulled out of this month’s Melbourne Grand Slam upon advice from his doctor.
“I have a right shoulder injury which has hampered me for some time now,” Cilic explained.
“It is improving day by day, but I still don’t feel fit enough to be able to compete at the highest level.”
He added: “I am really sad that I won’t be able to participate in Melbourne, especially after winning the last Grand Slam in New York.
“But I was advised by doctors to be careful as much as possible to avoid even more serious problems.”
Cilic, who reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open in 2010, becomes the second big name player to pull out of the tournament, following Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s withdrawal due to an arm injury.
