With Chelsea dropping out, can Man United possibly land Nicolas Otamendi at a lower price?
Manchester United are inching closer and closer to completing a deal for Valencia star defender Nicolas Otamendi after their main rival for his signature dropped out.
According to the Metro, Chelsea have pulled out of the transfer race for the 27-year-old Argentinian center back amidst reports that Otamendi’s agent is heading to Old Trafford to complete a deal. The Metro reported that Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was keen on signing Otamendi and was even prepared to offer the Valencia superstar a major salary boost in exchange for his signature.
With no word out of Etihad Stadium regarding a possible bid from Man United’s arch-nemesis Man City, the way appears to be clear for Louis van Gaal to make the £35.5 million-rated defender his next major signing of the summer.
The Metro previously reported that Man United have tried to land Otamendi during each of the the last several summer transfer windows, and despite an impending bid from the club’s bitter rival Manchester City, look poised to get a deal done after Otamendi’s recent “strike.”
Otamendi was named to the 2014-15 La Liga team of the season after setting a career-high with 6 league goals in his first full season with Valencia.
