The German international is a highly regarded talent after some fine displays in the Bundesliga down the years, though he has also had some injury setbacks in recent times.
Despite his fitness concerns, it looks like he is a top midfield target for these two Premier League giants, with the Gunners and the Red Devils in a two-way battle for his signature.
It remains to be seen which club he decides on, though both are in need of signings in the defensive midfield department and could make the 24-year-old one of their first pieces of business of the summer, according to claims in the Daily Express.
It is also reported that clubs like United, as well as rivals Manchester City and Chelsea will miss out to Paris Saint-Germain for the signing of Paul Pogba from Juventus.
