A ferocious Christian Eriksen free-kick rebounded off the crossbar, and Kane smartly turned the bouncing ball into the empty net with City keeper Willy Caballero still grounded.
The 22-year-old insists that he remained confident throughout his barren run, but would nevertheless have been relieved to score as he looks to shake off accusations that he is a ‘one-season wonder’.
Kane found the net 31 times for Spurs in all competitions during the 2014-15 campaign, despite starting the season as third choice behind Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado.
Both Adebayor and Soldado left Tottenham this summer without a recognised forward coming in to replace Kane – prompting suggestions that the homegrown youngster was under too much pressure.
He kept his scoring boots sharp with two for England during the recent international break, and will now hope that he can rediscover his form from last season for club as well as country.
