The Dutchman completed his move to Fenerbahce last week after Louis Van Gaal gave the switch the green light despite a lack of attacking options at the club currently.
Nevertheless, that wasn’t the reason why Wenger was left shocked by the move as he believes that Van Persie still had plenty to offer at the highest level.
“He is a huge loss to English football because he is still a great footballer. He was one of the best I ever managed, a man with an exceptional technique,” Wenger said, according to Sky Sports.
“I don’t know what happened or why he left Manchester United, but I have to tell you that he is a great loss to the Premier League.”
The 31-year-old joined United back in 2012 as he left Gunners fans infuriated with his decision to join their rivals.
However, it proved to be the right move as he helped deliver a 20th league title to the club in his first season at Old Trafford.
Although injuries and lack of form ensured that he struggled last season, Wenger’s praise will undoubtedly be pleasing to hear for the former Emirates hero as he looks to regain his form ahead of Euro 2016.
