Central defence
After years of struggle trying to emulate the great centre-backs of the past – think Tony Adams, Martin Keown or Sol Campbell – Wenger finally hit on a winning formula last term.
The partnership of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker appears to just get stronger and stronger with every game and therefore captain Thomas Vermaelen has been pushed to the periphery.
The Belgium international is looking for a way out of the Emirates as a result, with the Guardian reporting that Chelsea are interested – although a move abroad is more likely.
If Vermaelen leaves then cover will be needed and the Mirror reports that Wenger is lining up Manchester United veteran Rio Ferdinand as short-term cover.
