Centre-backs
Staying: Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny.
Going: Thomas Vermaelen, Johan Djourou.
Coming in: Fabian Schar (Metro), Matthias Ginter (Guardian).
In recent years Wenger’s team has been criticised for being weak at the back, but the 64-year-old appears to have now found the perfect formula.
Koscielny and Mertesacker have formed a brilliant partnership at the back and the German’s leadership makes him the ideal candidate as a future captain.
This is all the more likely as their current skipper Vermaelen has grown frustrated at a lack of game time and is likely to be sold come the end of the season.
With Djourou unlikely to return after his loan spell at Hamburger SV new talent will be needed and FC Basel’s Schar could well be the perfect option, along with fellow youngster Ginter of Freiburg.
